Threads, Meta’s competitor to Twitter and X, continues to grow steadily. Mark Zuckerberg revealed during the company’s Q1 2024 earnings call that the social network now boasts over 150 million monthly active users, up from 130 million in February.
In recent months, Threads has been working on integrating with ActivityPub, a decentralized protocol used by networks like Mastodon. In March, the company allowed U.S.-based users over 18 to connect their accounts to the Fediverse, enabling their posts to appear on other servers.
Threads also plans to release its API to a broader group of developers by June, giving them the opportunity to create experiences around the social network. However, it’s unclear if Threads will allow developers to create complete third-party clients.
Last week, Meta launched its AI chatbot across Facebook, Messenger, WhatsApp, and Instagram. Threads was notably absent from this list, possibly due to the lack of native direct messaging functionality.
On Wednesday, Threads introduced a new test feature that allows users to automatically archive their posts after a specified period of time. Users can also archive or unarchive individual posts and make them public.
Although Threads is still relatively young at around nine months old, Meta has steadily grown its audience. Nonetheless, Meta’s social network continues to gain traction. According to app analytics firm Apptopia, Business Insider reported earlier this week that Threads now has more daily active users in the U.S. than X.

Just like on Instagram, when you hide a post on Threads, it won’t be visible to others, but you can still see it yourself. Mosseri said this feature will be tested with a small group of people at first. He mentioned before that he thinks all posts on Threads should disappear after a month, but most users disagreed with this idea in a poll.
On Instagram, it’s common for people to hide old posts, but on Threads, it might be more controversial. As Threads adds more features focused on real-time updates, automatically hiding posts could make it harder to look back at old posts. However, letting posts disappear after a while might encourage people to share more often, which could help Threads grow.
